Hey y’all! My name is Aissa Dearing and I’m from Durham, NC! I recently graduated from JDC Early College High School and I am transferring to Howard University (as a junior) to continue studying history and environmental studies.
As of recent, I organized the March on Saturday for Black Students and am working a campaign to remove School Resource Officer (SROs) from Durham Public Schools (DPS). In 2018, I cofounded the Durham Youth Climate Justice Initiative (@drmyouthclimate) which sets an intentional space for young people of color in climate justice through monthly public conversations. Throughout high school, I have also worked with:
Made in Durham — which works to dismantle barriers for students of color in Durham Public Schools.
Youth Justice Project — to end the school to prison pipeline
East Durham Children’s Initiative — as a mentor for fourth grade students
I joined Anjali Boyd’s campaign because I love her take on the intersectionality on addressing environmental issues and inequities — we must consider race, wealth and access to health care when making decisions around sustainable community development.
